Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a total of four novels and fifty-six short stories divided into five series. "The Valley of Fear" is his final novel and was first published in 1914. The novel is based on the real-life exploits of the Molly Maguires and the Pinkerton detective, James McParland. At the beginning of the story, Sherlock Holmes receives a message from Fred Porlock, an agent of Professor Moriarty. Porlock occasionally sends information with the intention of opposing Holmes's intelligence. Together with Watson, Holmes deciphers Porlock's message, and the outcome indicates that a man named John Douglas in Birlstone is in danger.
